Chamorro Bistek
A comforting island favorite made even easier with Chamorro Habanero Red Rice Seasoning. Tender beef simmered with onions in a savory soy sauce and vinegar sauce, served over fragrant steamed rice.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs beef sirloin or top round, sliced or cubed
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 3–5 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 3/4 cup white vinegar
- 1 bag frozen green peas
- 1 cup beef broth or water
- 3 tablespoons cooking oil
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 4 tablespoons Chamorro Habanero Red Rice Seasoning
Instructions
- Heat the cooking oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Sauté the garlic and onions until fragrant and the onions begin to soften.
- Add the beef and brown for 5–7 minutes.
- Add the soy sauce, beef broth (or water), Chamorro Habanero Red Rice Seasoning, kosher salt, and black pepper. Stir well and bring to a simmer.
- Add the white vinegar. Cover and simmer over low heat for 45–60 minutes, or until the beef is tender.
- Stir in the frozen green peas during the last 5–10 minutes of cooking and heat through.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot over steamed white rice or Chamorro red rice.
Chelu Tip: Bistek is even better the next day! Let the beef rest overnight so it soaks up even more of the savory soy-vinegar flavor.
