Chamorro Bistek Recipe

Chamorro Bistek

A comforting island favorite made even easier with Chamorro Habanero Red Rice Seasoning. Tender beef simmered with onions in a savory soy sauce and vinegar sauce, served over fragrant steamed rice.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs beef sirloin or top round, sliced or cubed
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 3–5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 3/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1 bag frozen green peas
  • 1 cup beef broth or water
  • 3 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 4 tablespoons Chamorro Habanero Red Rice Seasoning

Instructions

  1. Heat the cooking oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Sauté the garlic and onions until fragrant and the onions begin to soften.
  2. Add the beef and brown for 5–7 minutes.
  3. Add the soy sauce, beef broth (or water), Chamorro Habanero Red Rice Seasoning, kosher salt, and black pepper. Stir well and bring to a simmer.
  4. Add the white vinegar. Cover and simmer over low heat for 45–60 minutes, or until the beef is tender.
  5. Stir in the frozen green peas during the last 5–10 minutes of cooking and heat through.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot over steamed white rice or Chamorro red rice.

Chelu Tip: Bistek is even better the next day! Let the beef rest overnight so it soaks up even more of the savory soy-vinegar flavor.

Pair with: Chamorro Habanero Original Hot Sauce for an extra kick of bold island flavor.
